Two years went by, and my flute sat in the closet. I can say I regret that, but there is really no point. When I picked it up again, my fingers were not as nimble as they were during college when I was practicing hours and hours each week. But I came at it from a completely different angle than I ever thought I would. I was encouraged this time by someone who has become a life long friend. He had some songs he was working on and was able to share parts for me to play on the flute. I found a page of blues scales that was in an old folder and took it to my first jam with him and another friend. From this point I did a lot of jamming with those two. It was an amazing time of self discovery and development of my own improvisational style on the flute. At that time I saw a movie called Slam, and with the discovery of Saul Williams and Slam Poetry, I found the next musical thread within myself. I never considered myself to be a writer, but soon found if I closed my eyes in meditation, and wrote line by line, I was able to allow lyrics to flow through me. Here are some of my first lyrics within a jam with my first 2 improvisational friends.
